Bridal Party Dresses

Posted on Jun 26, 2008 under Vintage Wedding Gowns, Wedding Dresses | No Comment

Your wedding is an once-in-a-lifetime experience, so you want to make sure that you feel and look your best. Besides the season and location you prepare for your wedding, one of the very important key is having a good choice of your bridal party dresses. Many brides-to-be consult me for suggestions for choosing their dresses. My ideas about dress choosing are as follows.

When it is time to choose bridal party dresses, one of the first things you want to do is to get an idea of the way you want your dresses to look. You probably have a very clear idea in mind to pick your bridal party dresses after visiting wedding dresses shops and browsing through the selections months before the wedding. Otherwise, you can also get very good ideas on the styles of bridal party dresses that are available by looking through bridal magazines.

When choosing your bridal party dresses, you had better consider your body shape and your personal style. For example, a mermaid style party dress may not be the right fit for you if you are full figured. If you generally dresses in simple clothing and prefer clean lines, then very simple bridal party dresses may be the choice for you. If you have always dreamed of looking like a princess on your wedding day, then maybe you need very ornate and elaborate wedding dresses, full of beads and sequins. You might even consider wearing vintage dresses that your grandmother or your mother wore on her wedding day. Ultimately, the choice is yours when it comes to choosing a wedding dresses style. Make sure that you feel comfortable in the dresses, and it makes you feel beautiful.

When choosing the right bridal party dresses, you have to look at your budget. Brides on a tight budget do not need to pay many thousands of dollars for a wedding dress. It can seem a real shame to discard their precious wedding gowns after the day is done. If you have a small budget for your wedding dresses, it is time to consider having someone in your family make your wedding dresses for you or shopping at consignment or thrift stores. You might be surprised at what you can find for fewer than one hundred dollars. With a little legwork, you can find discount bridal party dresses that are right for you.

Fashion does come and go, and bridal party dresses are no exceptions. You may find that within a couple of decades old wedding gowns come back into fashion and are often of considerable sentimental value. If you have opted for one of the simple wedding gowns that are classical and dateless, the chances of your gown being worn by future generations, is even greater. So store your gown wisely and you may get to see your daughter or grand-daughter enjoying the same dress, in years to come. Don’t be embarrassed to mention your stored bridal party dresses to the younger members of your family; they may be delighted to save some money and to carry on a family tradition.

White Wedding Dress

People like to entail profound meanings to the colors of wedding gowns. There is an old poem about how the color of your wedding dress will influence your future: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you’ll live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.” To some extent, the white wedding dress symbolize you have a perfect love with your Mr. Right.

I have been told a joke about white wedding dress. It goes like this: a fresh-faced lad on the eve of his wedding night asks his mother, “Mom, why are wedding dresses white?” The mother looks at her son and replies, “Son, white wedding dress shows the town that your bride is pure.” The son thanks his mom, and then seeks his father opinion, “Dad, why are wedding dresses white?” The father looks at his son in surprise and says, “Son, all household appliances come in white.” Of course, this is just a joke to amuse. But it really initials a wonder why the bride often wears white wedding dress.

Millions of girls and women that dream of the perfect marriage with a white wedding dress in their minds. But why white is preferred? Where did this tradition come from? Historically speaking, white has long been accepted as the traditional color of the wedding dress, which became popular in the Victorian era, after Queen Victoria wore a white wedding dress at her wedding. Though brides continued to wear in gowns of different colors, white was now set as the color of choice for weddings and has continued ever since. Various theories for the meaning of this color choice have been put forward, from an appreciation of color symbolism, to represent purity of heart and the innocence of childhood. Later, it was mistakenly believed that the color white symbolized virginity and should be worn only by a virgin bride. In Godey’s Lady’s Book, 1849, white wedding dress is mentioned once again. He said: “Custom has decided, from the earliest ages, that white is the most fitting hue, whatever may be the material. It is an emblem of the purity and innocence of girlhood, and the unsullied heart she now yields to the chosen one.”

In the past, Chinese think the color of white shows sadness and usually wear white dress in the funeral ceremony and for the wedding Chinese are in favor of the color of red, the traditional color of good luck. Nowadays, in modern Chinese weddings, particularly in Western countries, the bride usually opts for the white Western dress or changes from a white wedding dress to a red gown later in the day and sometimes a gold colored gown later on.

Choosing A Wedding Dress With Jacket

If you plan to have a fall or winter wedding, consider a wedding dress with jacket to ward off the chill. There are many different designs for a wedding dress with jacket. In fact, it does not have to be fall or winter for you to consider wearing a wedding dress with jacket. Some jackets are made of thin material and therefore suitable for summer or spring weddings. Some jackets are also small enough to look like shrugs, stoles or boleros. These can really accentuate a bride’s waist and the gown as well.

Why Choose a Wedding Dress with Jacket

One of the primary reasons why a bride chose to wear a wedding dress with jacket is that the day of her wedding is chilly. Usually, jackets designed to ward off the chill can cover the entire bodice of your wedding gown, so the jackets are often made with embellishment to look sophisticated to ensure that it can be worn in and out of church.

It could be that she is partial to jackets or partial to the design which happens to have a jacket with it. Jackets can easily leave the unfavorable parts as large shoulders or arms, a growing belly undefined. A wedding dress with jacket can also cover the less conservative gown underneath for the benefit of some conservative priests and family members.

Other reasons why some brides chose to wear a wedding gown with jacket may be because it complements the gown so well and does not even appear to be a jacket at all. Some jackets are made of very fine material and can be considered as the top of the gown. Others definitely look like a jacket and can be taken off when the location of the wedding turns stuffy.

A wedding gown with jacket was all the rage a couple of decades ago and this design had a jacket with long sleeves and wide lapels. Some jackets are fitted to accentuate the waist of the bride while others are no more than boleros or shrugs that are very great complements to some gowns. Jackets need not look bulky and ill fitting because some designers integrate wedding gowns with jacket according to the trend.

Wedding Dress Alterations: Making Your Dress Perfectly Fit You

To alter a wedding dress to make it smaller is relatively easy, while a great difficulty to make a wedding dress bigger. That’s why most bridal shops order your dress slightly larger than you would expect. Of course, you want your wedding dress to fit you perfectly, so wedding dress alterations are a must.

Ways to Get Your Wedding Dress Altered

The easiest way to get your wedding dress altered is to use the seamstress in the bridal shop where you bought your wedding dress. Most bridal shops have a seamstress on staff to take care of wedding dress alterations. It’s time-saving and rather convenient to take advantage of these seamstresses. You don’t have to take time to search yourself for a seamstress and you can have alterations for your dress just in the bridal shop where you got your dreamed dress and have had it tried on several times for alteration lookout. What’s more, most of these seamstresses are professionals, seldom need you worry about their work. Check when you purchase your dress to see if wedding dress alterations are included in the price, or if the charges are figured based on what alterations need to be made (a simple hem will cost less than taking in a bodice that is covered with beadwork). You can also find a seamstress by yourself. If you have had clothing tailored before and know and trust someone to do the work, that is an excellent option as well. Finally, you can do a search for wedding dress alterations in your local yellow pages.

How to Do Wedding Dress Alterations?

Usually wedding dress alterations are done in a series of fittings. During the first fitting, the seamstress will have you try on your dress with the shoes and undergarments you are planning to wear on your wedding day to make sure the hem is in the right length. She will then pin all the seams of your dress until they fit perfectly. The second fitting is where you will try your dress on again with the initial alterations made to it. Some seamstresses will only lightly stitch these initial alterations to make them easier to change if necessary. Any additional alterations to your wedding dress will also be made at this time. Then your seamstress will do any final alterations and make the stitching more permanent. At your third and final fitting, you will try your dress on one more time to make sure that it fits perfectly. They will then steam your dress and you can bring it home to get ready for your wedding!

Wedding Dress Shopping

Posted on Feb 10, 2008 under Wedding Dresses | No Comment

Shopping for a beautiful wedding gown may be one of the most exciting parts of your wedding planning. You’ve probably been dreaming of the perfect dress for months or years. But all of a sudden you get nervous–the day comes. It’s time for you to go to the store. You’re filled with self-doubt whether you can find that perfect dress of your dreams in the world of bridal shops. Oh, how lucky you are, here’re some helpful tips on wedding dress shopping.

Before you go

Don’t expect to whip through the store in five minutes and score an amazing find and shopping for a wedding dress that really suits you can be rather time-consuming. But if you have a clear picture of what you want before you go, you can successfully make it a happy and time-saving experience. Before heading down to the store and sorting through racks of wedding dress designs, you need to identify what cut will best fit your body and which silhouette will most flatter your shape and size. Do some online research first to gain you a general idea of what style you like most and some related language which might be quite useful for you to relay your desired style to the staffs when you’re in a shop.

Finding the most flattering style

Consider that most dresses styles are determined by what many call the silhouette. This describes the cut of the wedding dress and how it falls to the floor. For example, a ball gown design features fitted bodice and waist with a full skirt and will look good on all but the very short person, on whom the gown may seem overwhelming. Crinolines will also be part of most ball gowns and they usually have a lot of fabric requiring extra care while wearing them.

For a wedding dress that isn’t as full as a ball gown yet has the material flow, an “A” line gown can flatter most every body type. With a fitted bodice shape with A-line skirt, it hides lower-body irregularities as well flatters slim waistlines while making the most of bust. With an empire gown, the raised waistline set just below the bust, right from which the skirt begins flow down with no additional definition at the waist, so it’s perfect for brides who want some concealing coverage for their stomach and hip areas.

A sheath style is much like an evening gown, no flair of the skirt, lays in soft contours to the body. Good for tall and willowy brides. But a sheath style is usually made of thinner fabric and will not hide flaws on any part of the body, so it is typically not recommended for those who may have flaws from the waist down.

Sticking to your budget

Of course, the most important thing is you look the best on your dress, but at the same time you don’t want to spend a fortune on something one-off. Stick to your wedding dress budget and have your beautiful dress without paying far more than you planned.
